Minority Scholarships: Social Need v. Legality

Saint Louis University

Summary

From a legal standpoint, minority scholarships are currently on unstable ground.  This presentation will discuss the impact of recent challenges to minority scholarships on Latinos in higher education from both national and state perspectives. On one hand, a compelling social need persists to increase diversity in institutions of higher education, and on the other hand, serious challenges exist to the legality of minority scholarships and programs.  In order to fully comprehend the issues involved, this presentation will discuss the case history of minority scholarships, the relevant legal considerations, the recent legal challenges to minority scholarships, and the impact on Latinos both nationally and in Missouri.
